7 Days to a Cleaner More Organized Home - Part 1

The idea behind these seven days is to bring back some order to your home. You will tackle an area or room of your home each day. These are quick surface cleanings, not deep cleaning. To make this program work you should keep up the order in your home by putting things away and doing the daily duties such as washing dishes, laundry and making beds each day. Start off your morning with a clean slate.

So let's begin.

Have a piece of paper and a pen or pencil handy. This is where we will keep notes on small items we can hopefully find in the surplus (we all have excess don't we?) of our homes or if not pick up at a very reduced cost (think Dollar Store here) to help the room along.

You should also make note of and put aside any items you know you would like to get rid of. Don't overdo it, we're just cleaning here but if something catches your eye have a central place to keep it until Saturday or go on and dump it.

Monday: The Kitchen

Empty the sink of dirty dishes. Fill it with warm water. Put all the dishes (that can fit) back in the sink to soak.

Take the top off of the garbage and place it in the middle of the kitchen floor. This is where you will be depositing any trash or debris found on the counters as you clean.

Start putting things on the counter away. When you come to something you know needs to go dump it in the garbage. If it's a dirty dish then put it in the sink.

Open the fridge and toss all expired foods. Empty the plastic with expired foods and dump the plastic in the sink that is full of soap hot water.

Empty the dish drainer and/or the dishwasher. Start washing and rinsing those dishes.

Counters clean? Sink empty? Get a bucket and add a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and a dash of your favorite all purpose cleaner. Get two to three cleaning cloths.

Wet a cloth with the solution and start wiping your counters and cupboards from top to bottom.

Go over the fridge with one of the cloths. You have more than one. If one gets gunky place it to the side and get the next one.

All done? Now dump the cleaning cloth in your now less than pristine cleaning solution.

Sweep up and food and debris on your floor and toss it in the garbage.

Move the garbage outside of the room if possible or off the floor under the cupboard if that is where it normally goes.

Now mop your floor.

End your mopping at the door, turn out the light and pat yourself on the back.

So did you notice anything you might like to have to help the kitchen along? Small baskets to help the junk drawer the cupboard of the refrigerator (small plastic organizers are great in the refrigerator)? A lazy susan for the spices? A basket for teas? Add it to your list to be on the lookout for. Not too much. Our goal is to enhance the room not overwhelm it.

Tomorrow the Living Room and Dining Room....

Get Organized For Your Home Improvement

Get your home improvement projects off to a better start and finish with good organization - from the get-go. With organization, you can have everything you need for your project at your finger tips, all in one central location. Plus you'll be able to work from start to finish without wasting precious time, energy and funds looking for and replacing things (instructions, tools, nails, blueprints, measuring tape, etc.) for your projects. So get ready, here are some helpful tips on how to get organized with your home improvement projects.

Basic Organizing for Your Tools & Projects

Your mission here, should you decide to accept it, is to set up a central information and storage where you have everything all in one place. This system does not need to be expensive and fancy; it just needs to work - for you.

Start by looking around your home environment for a place to set up your organizational headquarters; a shed, basement area, garage area, barn or other out building, for example. And in no particular order, begin working on your organization there with the following main points of focus:

- Establish an information center for all of your documents: work orders, project plans and blueprints, receipts, equipment instructions, etc. If can be an old metal file cabinet or toolbox with drawers, sturdy wipe-down plastic carrying containers that you can stack, an old chest of drawers or some odds and ends shelving units.

- Then using the storage space, insert files and folders for your project materials brochures, instructions, receipts, bids, etc. The results will be all your info in one main place for handy, convenient access round the clock.

- Set up an area for your continuing training and other educational materials: books, how-to videos, audio cassettes, home improvement magazines, helpful articles copied off the Internet, guides, reports and other learning materials.

- Insert some small boxes or other types of storage containers to hold small tools like pencils, pens, note tablets, rulers, tape, glue, tape measures, etc.

- Then arrange your equipment in larger surrounding storage units, shelves, cabinets, bins, and on wall hooks. Check out organizational aids at local hardware stores and stores like Wal-Mart or Target or wholesale / discount centers for good buys.

By planning ahead, you'll be ready for your projects from start to finish. The time you save looking for things and the money you save on buying duplicate items (because you can't find them), can them be invested in your projects - or more fun tools and storage equipment!

Getting Organized at Home

One of the most difficult things that there is to do is to get organized around the home. This is because all of us tend to be comfortable where we live, and that is a good thing, because the home should really be the most relaxing place that we ever are. It should be someplace that we are able to get away from the world around us especially after a hard day at work, or other problems that we might have. While all of us like to be comfortable at home, sometimes there are things that brought us some of that comfort and we may not even realize. Many of us do not even realize that we are living with clutter all around us, yet for far too many of us this is a real problem. It is probably because we all tend to accumulate things over time, and sometimes they just build up so slowly and steadily that we don't recognize it. So if you really want to get organized around your home, and to get rid of some of the clutter that you have to deal with, then it's best to stand back and take an objective look at your living arrangement. If you're unable to do so then get a close friend who is able to be objective to give you their opinion.

Getting organized around the home involves more than cleaning clutter, however. It could involve anything from paperwork that is out of sight, to make sure that things run smoothly because we are on a good schedule. Did you ever wonder how some of the people you know that seem to accomplish so much more than you do in a day's time are able to do it? I can guarantee you it is because they are an organized person, and because of their schedule they are able to accomplish more in a shorter period of time that most other people. The first, and probably most important thing about getting organized at home is to clear the clutter. Living in a clean and uncluttered environment is very and port to be able to keep your organizational schedule. The next thing that would be important to do is to make sure that all of your affairs are in order, and that you are able to keep up on any routine mundane task that needs done. Then make sure that you write down everything that needs to be done on a daily basis, and then see where you can fit it all into your schedule. If there is anything that needs taken out of the schedule then do that. Otherwise make sure that everything that is in your schedule gets done before anything else is added.
