General and Specific Power Tools

Power tool is a general term for any tool that runs by a motor instead of solely by man power. While most tools are hand-held, some are designed for specific tasks, while others are for general usage. In general, those who work in a trade field, especially woodworking, are familiar with the specific types of tools needed for their jobs, but, as not everyone is a professional, the average person probably doesn't know the difference between a table saw and a compound miter saw. If you're an amateur considering using power tools for at-home repairs, projects, and woodworking, here is some information about general and specific tools.

General power tools are designed for nearly any task across all industries. Whether for carpentry or construction, many of these basic tools can be used. General power tools consist of medium-duty drills, screwdrivers, hammers, and saws. As all are used for efficiency, these medium-duty tools are needed to complete basic tasks in a quick amount of time. Whether needed to chip away at a piece of drywall or to put a screw in a wall, most general tools are able to complete basic or medium-strength tasks and are used by many professionals in construction, contracting, or trade jobs.

Specific power tools have only one use. One example is a jigsaw or a reciprocating saw. Both of these thin blade saws are needed for small tasks only. Similarly, many woodworking tools, such as planers and cutting tools are designed to give certain cuts or edges in the wood. General tools like drivers and hammers are also given specific features for heavy-duty jobs, in addition. Both of these and similar tools are designed with enough strength to chip away or put a bolt into concrete, rock, or any hard surfaces. These, however, are too strong for the tasks needed for general, medium-duty tools.

When deciding to use power tools for work or at-home repairs, think about what tasks you'll be doing. In general, at-home repairs require nothing more than a set of basic tools, but if you want to dabble in some woodworking to make a shelf or chair for yourself or your family, research the different types of planers, sanders, and cutting tools used to see which ones you should be using.
