Ever Been Cut By A Retractable Utility Knife?

A laboratory staff was getting ready to cut a gator-board with a retractable utility knife. A blunt blade was correctly changed but as the newly replaced blade was slide forward its front tip slip through the front of the underside opening in the knife body giving the staff a serious cut in the index finger. The staff was treated for his injury before returning to work.

Lesson Learned

• The staff was using an older type of retractable utility knife during this accident this knife had small thin safety lips cast into the interior of the metal handle halves front bottom and top.

• The screw securing the handle halves as one stayed secure during the accident. The blade point front slope appears to have jammed under an extremely little indentation worn into the bottom safety lip front possibly caused by blades sliding backward and forward through the years. As soon as the staff pushed the "push" button, the blade top front slope actually slips down underneath this indentation thus cutting the person finger.

Safety Tips

1) It is recommended that you change and safely discard all older types of retractable utility knives.

2) At all times while replacing blades of whichever kinds utility knife see carefully at the fitting to prevent slippage by ensuring the blade was seated securely. If the knife has a lot "play", do not attempt using it.

3) Before using a retractable utility knife you should check that it has safety features like the complete wrap-around overlaps.

4) At all times when cutting ensure that your body and clothing are away from the knife path.

5) At all times put on your safety goggles when cutting with utility knives. As the blades can break off without warnings.

6) At all times cut with sharp blades. As blunt blades pose safety hazards involving you to apply more pressure to do the cutting which can end up in the knife slippage.

7) At all times perform cutting by pulling the knife toward your direction and perform many passes when doing cuts on thicker materials.

8) Remember to never leave a utility knife unattended particularly with an exposed blade.

I have shared with everyone on the tips to decrease retractable utility knife accidents. And I hope that you my readers are more aware of how to use the knife safely.
