Forestry and tree surgery can be a potentially dangerous profession, working with chainsaws is hazardous and this is why it is essential to wear the proper protective clothing.
Chainsaws can be dangerous even when you are trained so imagine how many accidents occur to people who have had no training whatsoever. Imagine how bad the accidents can be if you are not wearing the right sort of protective clothing such as chainsaw trousers, helmet, boots and gloves.
The chain on a chainsaw is designed to shred, the chain has numerous small blades that tear at the trunk and limbs of trees. This is the reason they can do so much damage if the chain comes into contact with your body. Rather than cutting it shreds which makes cuts from a chainsaw particularly hard to stitch up.
To prevent these types of injury it is important to wear protective chainsaw trousers. There are several different types available to suit different types of work situation but the important thing to consider is the protection they provide against a chainsaw. Cut protection is one such factor that you should consider, the trousers will specify that they have cut protection.
As well as protection from cutting and shredding it is also worth considering the ability of the clothing to resist snagging and tearing. Many good makes have this resistance which means that they also provide good protection against sharps such as thorns and splinters of wood.
Other factors to consider in quality clothing is the protection afforded against the elements. Weather protection particularly against rain and sun is important, getting too wet or too hot can distract you form what you are doing. Look for clothing with good ventilation, weather protection and ultra violet protection.
As well as a good pair of trousers you should also consider a bib and braces, gloves, boots, eye and ear protection. Eye and ear protection is usually built into helmets designed for work in forest environment. As well as the noise of the chainsaw a helmet with eye and ear protection protects you from falling branches and debris and a full face shield will protect you from debris flying up from the chainsaw.
As well as good levels of protection cost is always a factor, generally the more expensive the equipment the better it performs. There are however different types of trousers for different work situation as much of your work may not require cut protection. You can get lower cost trousers that are designed for non chainsaw work to use on jobs where you do not need so much protection.
