A lot of kids and adults love to chew gum, but sometimes when the gum chewer either plays around with their gum, or goes to get rid of their wad of rubbery sweetness, it lands somewhere unexpected. It can get entangled in hair, stuck on clothing and unfortunately, get flattened into your carpet.
When you see a wad of gum embedded into your nice carpet, you may be tempted to do the famous McCauley Culkin in Home Alone scream, but stay calm, because there are a few ways to get the gum out of your precious carpet.
Freeze Gum with Ice
Place several frozen ice cubes into a plastic freezer bag and lay the bag of ice on top of the gum. Let the ice bag sit there for about 15 minutes, until the gum freezes solidly. Carefully peel the gum away from the carpet. This method doesn't involve any cleaning liquids or any substance that may harm the carpet.
Freeze Gum with Canned Air
Get some canned air that is used to clean electronic items. Shake the can and spray the air directly on the gum. The air will have the effect of instantly freezing the gum, which makes the gum brittle. You can then get a hammer, or other hard object and crack the gum into pieces. Vacuum the pieces.
Gum Removal Product
There is a product called Goo-Gone that is specifically made to remove gum from carpet. It's an oil based substance that cuts through the stickiness and lets you remove the gum with just a little bit of rubbing.
Multi Purpose Cleaners
There are many brands of multipurpose cleaners and foam carpet cleaners that can help to dislodge the gum. You'll need to do some scrubbing in order for this to work. Make sure you scrub gently so as not to harm the carpet fibers.
Steam Cleaning
Applying high pressure steam to the wad of gum can be successful. This usually involves renting a steamer and using a special cleaning solution. You'll need to go over the gum several times with the steam cleaner to loosen the gum.
